Artist’s Statement
What is around the corner, in the dark, hidden from view? Is it good or is it evil, light or dark? Our minds will fill in the blank spaces, but with what? The mind is capable of conjuring up far scarier images than our ordinary reality. I like to leave things partially ‘hidden’ within the darkness to allow the viewer’s mind to fill in the blanks.
I enjoy working on black paper. I’m intrigued with the idea of people and things emerging from the darkness and I love the way that the black paper helps me to achieve that goal.
My media of choice is colored pencil. I love the way that the pencils glide across the paper and the sound that they make. It can become very meditative; almost a spiritual experience at times as I work on one of my pieces.
